Partying doesn’t have to be bad for you. A generation focused on becoming its best self is proving that.

P
eople have been attending parties for as long as there have been people to party. Partying creates a sense of community in an otherwise unpredictable social world. People yearn to be socially connected with one another. It is a part of the human experience to crave conversation, presence, and shared space.

We once saw fancy ball gowns, formal dress, and structured dances. As years went on, society evolved to jazz and speakeasies, to nightclubs, house parties, and dive bars. The wheel wasn’t reinvented in every era; the principle stayed the same: fostering human connectedness. As expected, Generation Z has found a new way to gather.

What is a ‘Wellness Darty’?

You’re walking on your college campus mid-day, and you stroll past a house with 30+ people on the front lawn. The DJ is playing house music; attendees are moving their bodies in a Pilates practice, maybe gearing up for their run club, funneling energy drinks, sipping green juice, and doing a cold plunge.

What exactly is going on over there? Is that a wellness retreat? Is that a party? The confusion is precisely the point. It’s a wellness darty, and it is exactly what it sounds like. A day party, organized around wellness practices.

Wellness darties are popping up predominately on university/college campuses such as the University of Florida and the University of Alabama. Videos shared on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram have gone viral and brought this ‘trend’ into mainstream conversation.
Many have gone to social media to share their thoughts on this new form of partying, saying “wtf is a wellness darty” or sharing their day-time party videos circa 2015. The direct comparison made within said opinion posts is telling of the changes and norms we have seen surrounding partying across time and space.

The intersection of wellness and party culture

The intersection of party and wellness culture is not an easy one to navigate. Bridging what we thought to be two opposite ends of a spectrum into one isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea. But why? Wellness intersecting with party culture is owed to the fact that partying can feel like stepping outside a lifestyle many Gen Zers have fought to maintain.
We want the social excitement of having something on the calendar to look forward to. Wellness culture has crept into everyday life to the greatest extent we’ve seen, and a wellness-darty allows people to socialize without feeling like they have disrupted the lifestyle they have thoughtfully built.

The idea is simple. The younger generation wants to have fun. At the end of the day, many of them are college students. But they also want to invest in themselves and feel good tomorrow. Why should these two desires have to compete? That is the appeal of a wellness-darty: they don’t have to.

Gen Z wants more.

There is a clear pattern seen across social media: intricate morning and night routines, workouts, or diets. It is ever clear that people have become skilled at optimizing their lives. We try to balance every competing priority – eating protein, boosting collagen intake, taking supplements, hitting 10K steps. It is no surprise we have started to optimize our free time too.

We’re trying to make our socialization time work harder for us. Socialization already goes miles for us as it provides connection to feel secure, happy, and alive. Now, we’re trying to get more out of it. Arguably, it’s beautiful to see a generation so determined to do it all.

Who said wellness had to be boring?

Mainstream media discourse and public perceptions have associated wellness with restraint, giving it a bad reputation at times. College wellness-partiers are showing us that practicing wellness does not need to be boring. This community is actively dismantling the misconception that taking care of yourself automatically means taking the fun out of your life. It does not need to mean locking yourself inside your home or the gym. Living a well-rounded, wellness-focused life can also be loud and social.

There is something powerful about turning taking care of yourself into a collective experience. We don’t have to feel alone, or like we have a full individual responsibility. We can provide encouragement and hold each other accountable. We can share the experience of wanting to be the best version of ourselves while still making the most of our youth. Two things can be true at once. Happy dartying.
